Alabama Foundations attend Foundations on the Hill in Washington, D.C.

Torrey Smitherman, Executive Director of the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama and Board Chairman of Alabama Giving, and John Rochester, Executive Director of the Martha Christine White Foundation, recently attended Foundations on the Hill in Washington, D.C., a two-day legislative and public policy event hosted by the Council on Foundations and the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers.

During their day on the Hill, Smitherman and Rochester met with Members of Congress and their staffs about issues affecting foundations in our state, including excise tax for private foundations and pending IRA charitable rollover legislation. In addition to discussing issues affecting foundations, they also shared news about the great work of Alabama foundations and the causes and nonprofit organizations supported by foundation giving.

Building on what they learned in Washington, Smitherman and Rochester will present a legislative update at Alabama Giving's upcoming summer membership meeting. In the meantime, please visit Foundations on the Hill's website or the Council on Foundations' website to learn more about pending legislation affecting your work.

John Rochester and Torrey Smitherman with Congressman Jo Bonner

“During our time in Washington, D.C., we secured meetings with the offices of all elected Representatives and Senators from Alabama; we even had the opportunity to meet personally with several of our Representatives. In addition to discussing pending legislation affecting our work, we encouraged members of Congress to support the work of foundations by joining the House and Senate philanthropy caucuses. Members of Congress were also excited to hear about the great work of foundations and the causes and nonprofit organizations supported by foundation giving.

The advocacy work of foundations through events like Foundations on the Hill is vital to the health of the philanthropic sector and individual foundations that support our local communities.  We hope that even more of our Alabama colleagues will join us for this event next year.”                                                                        - Torrey Smitherman
