"Philanthropy is a ministry."
~ Arthur C. Frantzreb

News!  The two (2) hour continuing education course entitled Change Alabama with Giving Alternatives is now approved by the Alabama State Bar to include one (1) hour of ethics.

About the Course:  Is your client selling a business?  Exercising stock options?  Diversifying appreciated assets?  Redoing his or her tax and estate plan?  Needs to establish an estate plan?

Few of us are experts in philanthropy, yet each of us needs a working knowledge when one of these life events occurs.  As people age and eventually retire, they increasingly turn their attention to philanthropy, including volunteerism, as they seek to leave a legacy for their family or their community.  The astute advisor recognizes that the tax-smart ways of funding philanthropy occur during these earlier life events.

When should my client consider establishing a family foundation?  What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of a family foundation (or other private foundation) versus working with a community foundation to establish a donor-advised fund or a supporting organization?  Is there a charitable organization or community cause that you client supports?  What are the tax benefits of each philanthropic choice?  What is the proper way to raise the subject of philanthropy?  What are the ethical issues in making a suggestion?

Lawyers, accountants, and financial planners who attend the course "Change Alabama with Giving Alternatives" will learn the basics of establishing and operating a private foundation.  They will learn about the fund options available at a community foundation.  Supporting organizations often referred to as a hybrid between a private foundation and a public charity, will be covered in detail.  Attendees will learn about the different types of supporting organizations and the IRS tests they must satisfy.  The advantages and disadvantages of these philanthropic options will be compared, and case study examples given.  Attendees will receive the Southeastern Council of Foundation's publication, The Southeastern Toolkit for Giving and will receive two hours of continuing education credit.

Approved by:

  • State Board of Accountants (2 hours)
  • Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (2 hours)
  • Alabama State Bar (2 hours including 1 hour ethics)
